May & Baker EC 9-1 Eastside Athletic
A first-ever lead, a first-ever goal, and a lesson learned the hard way.
Eastside Athletic made the trip to May & Baker EC on Sunday for their first-ever 11-a-side fixture, and there was a moment of real history inside the opening exchanges — Billy Longford pounced on a goalkeeper error to fire Eastside 1-0 up, the club’s first-ever competitive goal, and its first-ever lead.
From there, May & Baker — last season’s Division 4 champions, now flying in Division 2 — showed exactly why they’ve earned that status, running out 9-1 winners.
There were good individual performances to take from the day, but a lack of top-level experience and a series of set-piece lapses proved too costly against a side with the quality and know-how to punish every mistake. Full credit to May & Baker — a strong, well-drilled team who took their chances ruthlessly.
It’s a scoreline that stings, but there’s real substance to take forward. Going toe-to-toe with a Division 2 outfit was always going to be a serious step up for a squad still finding its shape, and the goal — and that early lead — are moments this club will remember as its first. The lessons from today, particularly around game management and dealing with set plays, go straight into the training ground this week.
Eyes forward on the next one.
